User Information
Training
All prospective users of the Geomicrobiology Labs must complete the following lab safety training before being given access to the laboratory. All courses can be done in STARS and are web-based. Please send the Certificates of Completion to the lab manager.
General Safety, Injury Prevention (IIPP), and Emergency Preparedness (EHS-4200-WEB)
General Safety, IIPP, and Emergency Preparedness covers practices and procedures for preventing employee injury or illness from potential workplace hazards. Appropriate for all employees and students in administrative and other work environments.
Chemical Safety for Laboratories (EHS-1900-WEB)
Chemical Safety for Laboratories covers Stanford's Chemical Hygiene Program for safe handling of chemicals and chemical waste in the lab. It provides resources for assessing and controlling hazards and complying with applicable laws and regulations.
If applicable: Biosafety (EHS-1500-WEB)
Biosafety covers the safe use, handling, and disposal of biohazardous agents, and reviews emergency procedures for occupational injuries or biological material spills.
If applicable: Compressed Gas Safety (EHS-2200-WEB)
Compressed Gas Safety covers the general safety procedures for the proper use, storage, and handling of compressed gases.
Optional: Laboratory Ergonomics (EHS-4800-WEB)
Laboratory Ergonomics is for employees & students who perform repetitive tasks such as microscope use, pipetting, and miscellaneous hand tool use.
Laboratory specific training
In addition, all prospective users will do a lab walkthrough with the lab manager or other qualified lab member reviewing specific safety procedures and hazards in the lab. All prospective users of an analytical instrument must obtain training on the instrument by the lab manager or other qualified lab member before being allowed to use the instrument independently.
Access and Scheduling
The Geomicrobiology Shared Laboratories uses the online Agilent iLab scheduling system for laboratory reservations. Laboratory users will need to complete free registration, ensuring that they are added to their Principal Investigator's group, and email the lab manager after they have done so. Following registration and the training outlined above, the laboratory user will be given reservation access for the equipment they have been trained on.
Laboratory access is dependent upon training and experience, and laboratory users may work only during regular working hours (9 AM to 5 PM, Monday through Friday) unless given explicit permission to work after hours. Extended working hours are granted to users who have demonstrated that they will follow laboratory rules and complete procedures responsibly and safely.
Laboratory Communication
Primary communication from the lab manager and communication between users is handled through the Geomicrobiology Laboratories Slack channels. Users will be added to the appropriate channels once laboratory access is granted.
